I feel I am achieving my annotation goals by asking the text more questions and adding more of my own thoughts into the essay.

“Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” was published in January 2014 on the website World Post: an online news and blog site. It was written by Yo-Yo Ma, who is a graduate of the Julliard School and Harvard U, university, and a recipient of 17 Grammy Awards as well as many other awards.

I am reading this text because it was assigned as homework by my professor. I am looking to annotate and understand this essay, and the points that Yo-Yo Ma is trying to get across so that I can discuss it with my peers in class.

In this essay, the author is trying to bring up the question of where art’s place is in the world, and in education. He also tries to argue to add art to the “STEM” acronym.

Globalization- the connection of different parts of the world resulting in the expansion of international cultural, economic, and political activities.

World Economic Forum Crystal Award- Crystal Awards celebrate the achievements of leading artists and cultural figures whose leadership inspires inclusive and sustainable change.

Courtly- Very polite or refined.

Below are images of my annotations.
