Learning Outcome 1

Global and local revisions are the most important parts of the revision process. These revisions are what fixes the essay, and is the stepping stone from rough draft to final draft. In class, we learned to prioritize global revisions before local revisions. This was a big change for me, because I have always fixed my local errors before my global errors. Global revisions came first because a global revision might remove a local revision such as a run on sentence or some type of grammatical error. When I make my revisions, I start with fixing any criticisms made about my paper. I will take feedback from peer reviews and attempt to integrate the good ideas into my essay. This may involve fixing my thesis to focus more on what I talk about, providing more support or a better explanation for a quote, or moving paragraphs around so that the paper flows well. Afterward, I move on to local revisions. I have a good eye for spelling mistakes, but sometimes grammatical errors can slip by me. To catch these, I will use a site like Grammarly to check for any mistakes. Usually this program will catch most of my mistakes, but I don’t always trust these sites to get everything. Lastly, I will read my paper to myself. This allows me to hear how it will sound when someone else reads it, and also helps me check for any last local or global errors. I will be able to hear the flow of the paper, and any errors will be obvious when read aloud.
